Our History
In 1908, God brought together a group of Christian believers seeking a place to worship and an evangelist with the desire to plant a church. Rev. Willis W. Wines was in Indianapolis, IN on behalf of True Reformers Lodge when he heard of this group of Christians looking for a home church. On April 6, 1908, the thirty-five Christians who had been praying and seeking God for guidance came together with Rev. Wines and formed New Baptist Church. Initial meetings were held in the True Reformers Hall. In result of the generosity of the members of the church, within 18 months they had purchased the site on which New Baptist Church is currently located.
Rev. Wines shared with the congregation his vision of erecting a nicer, more modern brick building. The men of New Baptist Church followed through and constructed a new building themselves. After 10 months of construction, the congregation marched joyously into the new building. Having lived to see his dream fulfilled, Rev. Wines went to be with the Lord on September 1, 1972. The church mourned the loss of their beloved pastor who had been with them for thirty-five years. In 1972, when a new fellowship hall was added onto the building, the church chose to name it the Willis W. Wines Fellowship Hall in his honor.
The following pastors came to serve the church in years following: Rev. Richard H. Gaddie, Rev. Parker, and Rev. B.T. Almon. In 1958, Rev. James A. Williams was called to serve as pastor of New Baptist Church. Several auxiliaries were established under his leadership; the Benevolence Committee, Choraleers, Mission Chorus, Mother's Board, and the Scholarship Committee. Also a number of individuals have answered their calls into ministry under Pastor Williams. He remained faithful to God's call all of the years.
In 1969, when the highway was being built behind the church, the congregation, the congregation voted to remain at the present location rather then relocating. On March 29, 1972, the decision was made to incorporate New Baptist Church; and a groundbreaking ceremony for the W.W. Wines Fellowship Hall was held on May 21, 1972.
In March 2005, New Baptist Church celebrated the 47th pastoral anniversary for Rev. Williams as Pastor Emeritus. In December 2006, Rev. David L. Page responded to the church's invitation, and God's call, to become the new senior pastor of New Baptist
Church. He was installed in April 2007. In March, 2007, in honor of Rev. Williams, Pastor Page renamed the fellowship hall; the Wines- Williams Fellowship Hall.
As our church celebrates it's 115th anniversary in 2023, we recognize and are grateful to those pastors and others who have laid down their lives - day by day, year by year — to get us to this point. We truly have come this far by faith. Most of all, we are grateful for God's love, guidance, and faithfulness over the years. We recognize that without Him, we can do nothing.
